To celebrate the 2023 edition of UNESCO’s International Day of Women in Multilateralism, a series of intergenerational dialogues between gender equality champions within the multilateral system and a new generation of women as future leaders in global governance will be organized to inspire and empower young women to pursue careers in multilateralism and to generate new avenues of action for multilateralism to effectively promote gender equality.

The intergenerational dialogues echo the commitment of UNESCO’s Global Priority Gender Equality by ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life, and responds to the call of the UN Secretary General’s Report Our Common Agenda, to create a more effective, inclusive and networked multilateralism putting women and girls at the centre of sustainable development. The intergenerational dialogues also respond to the call of the UNESCO Youth Forum 2021 for the integration of youth in the decision-making processes.

Why is it important?

Women remain underrepresented in ambassadorship and global governance positions, standing at around 1.6% of heads of states and 21.6% ambassadors around the world. Sweden and Canada are the only countries in the 40 biggest economies to have 50% of ambassadors posts being held by women (2022 Women in Diplomacy Index).
