Introduction:
Thomas S. Huang, an informationalist, is of American citizenship. He is a professor at Beckman Institute, University of Illinois, USA. He was born in Shanghai, China. In 1956, he graduated from the Department of Electronics, National Taiwan University and obtained his Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute Technology in 1963. From 1973 to 1980, he was the director and a professor at the lab of information processing, School of Electronic Engineering, Purdue University. Huang is a member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Prof. Huang is principally engaged in the research of information and signal processing. He developed the compression method of bi-dimensional fax (document)of Prognosticate Difference Quantizer (PDQ), which has become an international standard for G3/G4 Fax compression; in the field of multi-dimensional digital signal processing, he put forward the theory about the stability of recursive filters; he established the formula of three-dimensional motion estimated from two-dimensional image sequence, thus opening up a new field for image processing and computer vision. In addition, his research team realized the prototype system of control display based on phonetic recognition and the analysis of visual sign language. Prof. Huang is a receiver of best paper award for several times, Guggenheim Fellow, A.V.Humboldt, U.S. Senior Scientist, IEEE’s 3rd Millennium Award, and other scientific and technological awards. Prof. Huang concerns very much about the development of Chinese science and technology. He made successive visits to many Chinese universities and institutes, delivering academic reports and launching academic exchanges. He provided assistance in cultivating senior scientific manpower and assumed the posts of a consultant and an emeritus professor. Besides, he has been active in participating and organizing international academic conferences held in China and invited to give a keynote speech. In 2001, he was elected foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
